Read subsea structure orientation directly from the ROV

Zupt’s Subsea Static Heading Sensor provides real-time orientation readings on an onboard display, without external communications or acoustic links. The compact, self-contained unit can be placed directly onto a subsea structure by an ROV, with readings visible to its camera from 3+ meters away.

Three IMU configurations provide pitch and roll measurements, with heading available on the tactical-grade and mid-grade versions.

How It Works

The sensor combines a MEMS Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with a titanium housing rated to 4,000 meters. Onboard accelerometers provide continuous pitch and roll readings. Optional motorized rotation enables quadrant-based gyrocompassing for heading measurement.

The LED display is designed for visibility in seawater. Available in blue, green, or red, it can be adjusted to vertical, angled, or horizontal positions to suit the ROV’s viewing direction.

A rechargeable internal battery provides at least eight hours of operation, with automatic activation on deployment and power conservation until the device is rotated or moved.

Designed for ROV Deployment

The sensor’s three-foot base provides stable contact with the structure. A pad eye allows attachment of a monkey’s fist for ROV deployment and recovery, while a machined, yellow-filled V marks Instrument North on the housing.

A single SubConn bulkhead connector handles charging, configuration, and testing. The modular design supports future upgrades without replacing the housing.

IMU Options and Accuracy

IMU A: Tactical Grade
  • Heading accuracy: <1.0° sec lat. RMS after eight-minute alignment
  • Pitch and roll accuracy: <0.05° RMS over 0–45° tilt

IMU B: Mid-Grade
  • Heading accuracy: <5.0° sec lat. RMS after eight-minute alignment
  • Pitch and roll accuracy: <0.1° RMS over 0–45° tilt

IMU C: Cost-Optimized, No Internal Rotation
  • Heading: Not available
  • Pitch and roll accuracy: <0.1° RMS over 0–45° tilt

Key Features

  • Large LED matrix display, approximately 230 mm wide, for clear ROV visibility.
  • Blue, green, or red display options for underwater contrast.
