Subsea Monopile Installation Monitoring

Precise installation without manually fitting sensor brackets

Monopile verticality affects the structural integrity and longevity of offshore wind turbines. Meeting operators’ installation accuracy requirements traditionally involves time-consuming, labor-intensive, and hazardous manual installation of brackets for subsea gyros or acoustic transponder buckets.

Zupt’s HaloCAM provides contactless monitoring from an ROV, eliminating the need for this manual bracket installation.

How HaloCAM Works

HaloCAM combines a high-resolution machine vision camera with a navigation-grade inertial navigation system (INS). Mounted on an ROV as a standalone system, it provides real-time monopile positioning data during installation.

Data transmitted to the surface includes:

  • Altitude
  • Inclination
  • Roll
  • Pitch
  • Relative heading of the target with respect to the ROV

The system also precisely measures the attitude and differential depth of a target positioned on the monopile.

Absolute Structure Positioning

HaloCAM combines machine vision camera data with the ROV’s positioning solution to determine the structure’s absolute position. The resulting positional accuracy is the same as that of the subsea vehicle’s USBL or LBL positioning solution.

Supporting Offshore Wind Installation

Monopiles ranging from 5 to 7 meters in diameter are driven into the seabed to form foundations for wind turbines installed above them. Precise installation is important to the overall efficiency of offshore wind energy generation.

HaloCAM helps meet operators’ demanding installation accuracy requirements by providing real-time positioning and attitude measurements during subsea installation.

Operational Benefits

  • Remote operation capability: No specialized personnel required offshore.
  • Simple interfacing: A single, self-contained unit.
  • No INS-to-camera lever arms to calibrate.
  • Straightforward dimensional control: Targets can be dimensionally controlled to casing while it is horizontal.
  • ROV deployment: Suitable for small or work-class ROVs.
  • Contactless measurements: Eliminates the time-consuming and hazardous manual installation of bracketry for subsea gyros or acoustic transponder buckets.
