Gyro Box

Real-time attitude data for transition piece leveling

Leveling transition pieces (TPs) for offshore wind turbines requires precise heading, pitch, and roll measurements. Zupt’s Gyro Box (ZGB) provides this data in real time, in a compact, robust package designed for offshore operations.

How the Gyro Box Works

The Gyro Box houses a defense-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU) in a durable, IP67-rated enclosure.

The system is lightweight and compact enough for a single crew member to deploy using a small boom crane. Once positioned on top of the TP, it immediately supplies real-time attitude data to support leveling.

Its crossbar design incorporates two 1-meter baselines with integrated reflective prisms. These allow precise dimensional control even when the unit is mounted out of direct sight of the TP flange.

Placement remains flexible without compromising measurement accuracy, provided the prisms are tied to the same reference frame as the flange.

Deployment and Operational Benefits

  • Single-person deployment: A single crew member can deploy the unit using a small boom crane.
  • Flexible placement: Integrated prisms support dimensional control when the unit is out of direct sight of the TP flange, subject to the shared reference-frame requirement.
  • Real-time measurements: Heading, pitch, and roll outputs support fast decisions during TP leveling.
  • Offshore construction: A compact, weather-resistant design provides ease of handling in marine environments.
  • Built-in redundancy: System redundancy is incorporated into the offshore wind design.

Offshore Experience

The Gyro Box draws on more than 20 years of Zupt’s experience in inertial technology and is already used on active offshore wind projects around the world.

Its real-time outputs and robust design help reduce operational time while ensuring transition pieces are leveled to specification.
