Zupt’s Next-Gen AUV Navigation: Delivering Automated, Precise Object Detection

Over the years, Zupt has helped to advance the use of imaging technology in subsea applications beyond basic video or photography. More recently, Zupt was asked to develop a custom stereo camera system based on its 3D Recon technology for use in autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) navigation. The system was designed for a third-party AUV to autonomously detect and navigate unique objects.

Zupt has delivered several design iterations to meet evolving technical requirements. The goal was to provide a cost-effective, AUV-compliant system for long-term operations. This development uses modern AI, machine learning, and computer vision techniques. The system delivers precise pose estimation, allowing the AUV to approach and recover each object with a consistent heading from about five meters away.
