Zupt's Gyro Box gives installation crews continuous visibility into transition piece orientation as leveling adjustments are made

Leveling an offshore wind transition piece (TP) requires crews to know precisely how the structure is sitting while adjustments are being made during installation.

Throughout the leveling operation, accurate heading, pitch, and roll information is needed in real time to determine the orientation of the TP and support the adjustments required to bring the structure within specified installation tolerances.

Zupt's Gyro Box was developed specifically to provide this information during offshore wind transition piece leveling. Positioned on top of the TP, the system continuously supplies real-time attitude data, giving the installation team an accurate view of the structure's heading, pitch, and roll as leveling progresses.

At the core of the Gyro Box is a defense-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU) housed within a durable, IP67-rated enclosure designed for offshore operations. Despite its robust construction, the system is lightweight and compact enough to be deployed by a single crew member using a small boom crane.

The Gyro Box also incorporates a crossbar design featuring two 1-meter baselines with integrated reflective prisms. These provide the dimensional control needed to maintain an accurate reference between the Gyro Box and the TP flange. The design also provides flexibility in where the unit can be positioned on the structure, including locations without direct line of sight to the flange, provided the prisms remain tied to the same reference frame as the flange.

Once positioned, the Gyro Box provides continuous, real-time heading, pitch, and roll measurements to support the leveling operation as adjustments are made.
