Current wellbore survey technologies include magnetic sensors and spinning mass rate gyro systems. While gyro surveys have been recognized as an accurate survey system in the industry, Zupt aims to provide increased accuracy for wellbore positioning through the use of inertial navigation systems.

The W-PINS (Downhole Well – Precise Inertial Navigation System) is Zupt’s inertial solution to survey and plot an existing well path in real-world 3D coordinates. The W-PINS is a fully integrated system with three navigation grade rate gyros and accelerometers that allow for the precise location of the wellbore and the bottom hole locations. W-PINS technology can be used for survey applications in various types of wells, within certain size and temperature parameters.

While current rate gyro survey methods claim 0.3% to 3% radial accuracy over distance travelled, they currently do not offer technology to dispute or confirm these claims. Zupt’s W-PINS has been tested to survey SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) wells, with results <0.1% of distance travelled on multiple runs. Our method provides a misclosure at the end of a traverse from wellhead to Total Depth and back to reflect a true accuracy that is individual supportable for each survey.
