Precise Electrical Riser Angle Monitoring

As offshore operations continue to move to deeper water, drilling vessels increasingly rely on Electrical Riser Angle (ERA) sensors to provide critical positioning information to the DP desk. Although there are many ERA systems offered on the market, very few deliver the level of resolution needed to avoid costly wear on drilling equipment associated with the inaccurate positioning of a surface vessel relative to the seafloor installed stack. Zupt’s Stack Heading and Electrical Riser Angle System (SH-ERA), provides high resolution, high update rate data to avoid this damage, as well as cost savings for our customers.

Zupt is the first to provide a cost-effective inertial solution for ERA measurements and monitoring with the SH-ERA. Both convenient and effective, our inertial Electrical Riser Angle monitoring system can directly interface to the DP desk to provide reliable high update rate differential data. Because of the nature of inertial navigation technology, the SH-ERA delivers accurate and precise data even in the presence of vibrations and noise associated with drilling operations.

The only reason a DP system exists is to keep the angle across the flex joint to a minimum.
