Most deep water well initiations today are positioned based on a simple buoy pattern at the required location. The conventional technique for buoy installations requires an LBL array and several hours of seabed operations while the ROV attempts to precisely position the buoys or a buoy frame. With no time taken for array deployment and calibration, C-PINS significantly increases the speed of operations for buoy installations.
C-PINS also provides instantaneous feedback to the ROV crew while they are placing the buoys with an update rate of 10Hz or even faster. With an LBL solution that updates every 2 or 3 seconds with range drop outs and a jumping position, it takes time to know where to place an object on the seafloor. With an inertial solution outputting precise, high update rate positions, the slight adjustments needed by the ROV crew in positioning prior to releasing the buoys or frame can be achieved much faster. An inertial solution is the optimal positioning method for deep water buoy sets.
